Mexico (Friday, February 10, 1984)   (March 27, 2009 5:31 AM)

RosesSome of the guys got up about 5:00 AM to take a cold shower before leaving the Mission. The building had a tub and shower, but no hot water available. I woke up about 7:30 and washed my hair in the kitchen sink. We went on the bus after rolling up our sleeping bags and stowing them back where they belonged. I waited tables for breakfast. I had purchased 14 red roses from a little boy in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico just before crossing the border with the intention of putting then on the tables for breakfast. I gave each lady a rose as a token of friendship and my thanks to them for working in the kitchen while we were in Mexico. We ate breakfast in two shifts and were back on the road.

We were making good time so we decided to stop for a couple of hours in San Antonio to see the Alamo. When we reached San Antonio, there was a very long parade going right through the heart of town. We couldn't even get near the Alamo so we got back on the interstate and headed for home. On the outskirts of San Antonio, we stopped at a little gas station and food store to stretch and relax. Everyone decided it would be a good time and place to take group pictures.

The Group

Back on the road, we were once again making very good time. We got to thinking about pizza so we starting looking for a store where we could purchase the ingredients. We made a fuel stop and some of the group went over to a restaurant to buy some ground beef. Later we stopped in a small town to get some other groceries we needed. Also one of the group, from Wichita, made a phone call to ask that a car pick him up at the toll gate. Bob J made pizza for us earlier in the trip and it was so good, so we asked if he would do the honors one more time. This time, he used the flour they had purchased in the village and it acted differently. The crust was real hard, but the pizza filling tasted pretty good. Dora had also made apple dumplings the first night Bob had made the good pizza and she made them again tonight. She, too, used the flour that we had purchased in the village. While they were hot, they were pretty good, but you could taste quite a difference in the mixture. Well, we had a time of quiet conversations and last minute thoughts before turning in. I went up front and read my Bible for a little while before I fell asleep in my seat.
